BACKGROUND:
Aleya is the eldest in a family of four girls. She is of Malay-Chinese-Arab-Bengali descent and speaks fluent English, Malay and a little Hindi.
Aleya started her “career” as a child extra at eight months in a telemovie. At 11 months she was yet in another telemovie, Maria, which starred the late Mustafa Noor, and her mother Fatimah Abu Bakar. At six she was a Palestinian refugee in Shuhaimi Baba’s movie, Selubung.
She is passionate about music, food, films, books (she’s potty over Harry Potter), traveling and loves water sports.
Aleya’s mother is a former journalist with an English daily and an experienced acting coach and media consultant (Salt Media Consultancy, Salt Shakers and Kelip-Kelip Sdn.Bhd.). Her father, Syed Zainal Rashid, is a businessman cum photographer with several exhibitions to his name. Sister Sharifah Amani is also an actress (Sepet, Gubra, Puaka Tebing Biru, Cinta, Mukhsin, Muallaf, CicakMan 2, Selamat Pagi Cinta, Sayang You Can Dance, Magika). Sharifah Aleysha starred in Yasmin Ahmad’s movie Muallaf, while Sharifah Aryana starred in Yasmin’s Mukhsin after appearing in Sepet, Pontianak Harum Sundal Malam 1&2 and Puaka Tebing Biru.
